The Short Version
I’m Mehedi Hasan, founder of GrowDwell, self-taught indoor gardener, and the person behind most of the plant guides you’ll read here. My focus is pet-safe, low-maintenance houseplants that actually work in apartment conditions: low light, irregular watering, dry winter air, curious pets, and busy lives. I’m not a master gardener. I’m a researcher and a curator who learned the hard way and started writing down what worked.
How I Got Here
GrowDwell started after one too many plant failures.
I had brought home what every blog called a “beginner-friendly” houseplant. Within three weeks, the leaves were yellow. Within six, it was in the trash. The care guide had told me to “water when the soil is dry” without mentioning that my north-facing apartment got two hours of weak winter light and the radiator was drying everything out by morning.
That pattern repeated until I got tired of it. I started reading actual research: university extension publications, plant biology references, ASPCA toxicity data. The advice in those sources was specific, sourced, and accounted for the conditions most people actually grow plants in. The advice on most gardening blogs was not.
GrowDwell exists to bridge that gap. Real research, translated into plain language, with apartment context built in.
What I Focus On
My specialty is the intersection of three constraints most beginner houseplant guides ignore:
- Low light: what actually grows in north-facing apartments with no direct sun
- Pet safety: plants that will not poison a curious cat or dog, cross-referenced against the ASPCA database
- Low maintenance: plants that survive missed waterings, irregular schedules, and winter neglect
When I write a guide, I am thinking about the person renting a studio apartment with one east-facing window, a cat that chews everything, and a job that sometimes takes them out of town for a week. If a plant cannot handle that, it does not go in the list.
My Research Approach
Every plant I recommend gets researched the same way:
- Light, water, and care requirements verified against at least two university extension sources (Cornell Cooperative Extension, Iowa State Extension, Penn State Extension, University of Vermont, University of Maryland Extension)
- Pet toxicity status confirmed via the ASPCA Toxic and Non-Toxic Plant database
- Real-world apartment behavior tested where possible, or noted as researched-only when not
I also try to share failures honestly. If a plant is sold as “easy” but reliably struggles in low light, I say so. The point is not to grow a Pinterest jungle. The point is to help readers pick plants that survive their actual home.

When I am not writing about houseplants, I am usually fussing over the ones I already have, repotting something that did not need it, or pretending I have room for one more pothos. I share the site with my co-founder Sweety, who handles the troubleshooting and propagation side of what we publish.
